"The Pros and Cons of Natural Facelifts"

http://www.rejuvenatemyface.com/natural-facelift-teleclass

By Dr Susan Lange, OMD, L.Ac., and Rufina James, MM

The focus on Facial Beauty and looking good is such an important part of our modern culture and this can be traced back to ancient times.

Modern options, of course include, cosmetic surgery, Botox, Restalyn, other fillers, and makeup “cover ups” but while these certainly have their place and may even be necessary – especially if you live in Southern California – none of these techniques can replace the vitality and radiance of your face and your skin when you feel healthy, happy and alive!

We all know how awful we look when we’ve missed a few nights of deep sleep and how good our face looks when we wake up refreshed and energized. How about when we have dental work, surgeries, head injuries, old emotional trauma, car accidents? How does that affect how we look and feel? And what happens when those events don’t get released from our head, our neck, our shoulders and our face?

In Chinese Medicine we can assess the health of the internal organ systems, like your digestion, and physical stresses and strains in your tissues, by reading your face. What happens inside you, and what you eat, is revealed on your skin and in your face. So a tired face will be reflecting tired organs. And then what you put on your face will affect your internal organs. It goes both ways.

The skin is the body’s largest organ. It is the “armor” that protects us from pathogens and excessive water loss, and helps insulate the body, regulates temperature and provides the sense of touch. Perhaps it is because we have so much skin that most of us take it granted, until it begins to show signs of aging, especially in the face.

The face tends to show the effects of aging more than anywhere else in the body perhaps because it is exposed to the elements more than other parts. Another reason is because, of all the skin on the body, the areas under the eyes and around the eyelids have the thinnest skin. These are typically the first areas to show signs of aging, in the form of sagging skin, “crows feet” and wrinkles.

Face and Skin problems can occur for many reasons both from external factors like:

Head trauma and injury

Car accidents,

Dental work

Old Birth trauma patterns

Environmental stresses

Surgeries

Toxic cosmetic products, and procedures

And internal factors including:

The skin being stressed and drying out

Build-up of bacteria, pus, or excess sebum, as in acne and skin rashes

Issues related to the liver, colon, and/or digestive process

Hormonal imbalances

Internal organ imbalances

Anesthesia and medications

Poor Diet

“Normal” aging

Each of the above conditions requires a different approach that can be summed up as a yin or yang approach.

The more yin internal approaches focus on healing old trauma that affects the face and skin, and supporting the internal organ systems.

And the more yang external approaches are about what you put on your face and skin that don’t adversely affect your internal organs but rather enhance and rejuvenate you.

Essential Oils

Essential oils and beautiful skin are natural companions.

Ancient civilizations knew the nourishing and restorative powers of essential oils for skin and used them in their highest quality cosmetics and skin care formulations. In the centuries since, very little can match the versatility, regenerative abilities and effectiveness of pure essential oils on the skin.

The good news is, aromatherapy skin care provides natural skin restoration, can reduce fine lines and wrinkles, diminish age spots, even out skin tone and increase the elasticity and density of skin.

Essential oils work so well for the skin because of their inherent properties. Unlike chemical molecules, such as the petrochemicals found in many skin creams, essential oil molecules are small enough to absorb easily into the skin. They renew the skin by penetrating all the way down to the dermal layer where new cells are generated.

THE YIN AND YANG OF SKIN CARE

Yang oils are cleansing and energizing and recommended when skin conditions arise from bacterial or fungal infections:

German Chamomile — A gentle but powerful oil that promotes the regeneration of the skin and reduces inflammation. It helps support digestive, liver and gallbladder functions.

Lavender — Ideal for skin care as it prevents the build up of excess sebum and helps with acne, dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, rashes and stretch marks.

Oregano — A powerful anti-infectious, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiparasitic oil and immune stimulant. Must be diluted when used on the skin, and only when an anti-infectious oil is needed.

Rosemary Cineol — Antifungal, antibacterial and antiseptic, this oil stimulates and supports endocrine gland balance.

Yin oils soothe and rejuvenate the skin and are recommended when skin conditions stem from drying out or stress:

Blue cypress — Excellent in skin care to help the circulatory system and lessen scar tissue

Clary Sage — Helps with balancing hormones (especially female) and is helpful to dry skin.

Patchouly — Beneficial for the skin and may help prevent wrinkles and chapped skin. Although anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial, it has a sedating, calming and relaxing effect.

Rosewood — Helps create skin elasticity and tissue regeneration. Gets rid of candida of the skin and slows the aging process.

Some oils have both yin and yang properties and are found on both lists. These oils can be used alone or in blends. A well-blended combination of essential oils can do wonders for the skin, as in Essential Oil Beauty Serum http://tinyurl.com/EssentialOilBeautySerum

Essential oils can also be incorporated into natural bases and creams with additional ingredients such as rosehip seed oil and wolfberry seed oil for additional moisturizing and nourishing. For example, the A·R·T® Essential Oil Skin Care System (http://essentialoilworld.com/essentialoilreviews/art-essential-oil-skin-care-system) utilizes an advanced system of skin restoration that combines premium essential oils for skin, a proprietary anti-aging peptide complex and advanced enzymatic DNA skin reconstruction technology.

Dr Caroline Cicero describes how she healed herself from cancer and what helped her to survive chemotherapy. She mentions acupuncturist Dr Julian Lange, OMD, L.Ac as one of her support team

Here's an article on cancer and chemotherapy by Dr Caroline Cicero from the Huffington Post outlining what she did to heal herself from Cancer. It was published on October 14th 2011

She is Director, Southern California Health and Aging Public Policy Institute and the Center for Visual Gerontology

When I was diagnosed with cancer in 2005, lots of well-meaning friends suggested that instead of chemotherapy, I try alternative remedies and cures. While I was grateful for their interest and acknowledged that chemotherapy's origins are toxic, I responded that I was confident in my course of chemotherapy because it has a 95 percent success rate. Also, as a 35-year-old mother of two small children, choosing a less effective and unproven method of fighting cancer was not an option for me.

Cancer itself is no picnic, but surviving chemotherapy was by far the hardest thing I have ever done. Some people keep working and exercising, looking normal, and getting by without too much change in their lifestyles. Some drug therapies are harsher than others, and I am told ABVD for Hodgkins Lymphoma is a rough one. However, I am sure many patients are tougher than I am. I didn't have a lot of extra energy to pretend I was feeling fine or to invest in cooking, cleaning, exercising or my graduate studies. Any energy I could muster was spent trying to be a mother to my two small children. I didn't want to be a superwoman, just a mom.

When I told my 6-year-old, first grade daughter that my hair would be falling out, she said, "If you are bald, who is going to take me to school?" I suggested I could wear a wig, and she said, "They'll know." My 3-year-old son thought my wig was funny, and he would just rip it off my head. I pretty much stuck with hats and was thankful I started with an abnormally large amount of hair. I always expected one of the more outgoing first grade classmates to ask me about my hair, but none ever did.

After chemo Fridays, I usually felt like ants were crawling all over my body for the first day or two, and then I would basically crawl into a debilitating and nauseous cave for the next 5-6 days, coming out only to hug, smile at, and occasionally feed my family. During 6 months, I had 12 sessions of chemo — every other week. I would feel better after 10 days, in time to go back for more.

A few things helped me survive chemotherapy.

My community of women in the megalopolis of Los Angeles was amazing. Other moms I hardly knew would leave food and gifts on my doorstep, play with my kids, clean my house, hold prayer circles for me and even offer me medical marijuana to reduce my nausea. (My doctor advised me not to smoke anything as lung problems are a side effect of my chemotherapy drugs). Friends and family from all over the country came to help out. My husband received random phone calls from people around the world who sensed we needed help. We did, and learned to accept it with a grateful heart.

Two days before each chemotherapy session, I had a blood test to be sure my body could handle the next onslaught of drugs. Incredibly, my blood cell counts never went too low and I never needed a booster shot to reduce my risk of infection. My oncologist told me I had "miraculous blood", which I found ironic since I was battling a blood cancer. "Just keep doing whatever you are doing," she said.

Apart from the community that surrounded me, I had three personal practices to help me survive. One was a weekly trip to an acupuncturist, Dr. Julian Lange Using alternative medicine helped my body with energy and blood counts. My oncologist advised me not ingest any herbal remedies that could alter the chemo drugs, so Dr. Lange stuck with needles only.

The second ritual that helped my mind was a trip to In-N-Out Burger after every blood test. Since it was always 12 days after my previous chemo round, I could enjoy my Double Double Animal Style enough to keep me going. A few weeks into my ritual, I noticed the bottom of the paper wrapper had Nahum 1:7 on it. I was encouraged when I looked up the verse upon getting home: "The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him."

My third ritual for surviving chemotherapy was exactly what the burger wrapper advised — helping my spirit. My church sent two amazing women to pray with me every week, for six months. Whether or not you believe that God heals people, research has found that the practice of prayer during the course of chemotherapy treatment — and also during chronic illness and pain — improves patients' emotional well-being, depression, and anxiety.

Being diagnosed with cancer is scary, especially for moms. Living through it and chemotherapy are difficult too. Accessing treatment, developing coping strategies, and accepting help make survivors

posted by Dr Susan Lange, OMD, L.Ac www.MeridianHolisticHealth.com

Chinese Medicine Teacher Extraordinaire

She was my first Chinese Medicine Teacher in 1974 and here she is with my Mum, Jane Hutson, in Hong Kong.

Frances was a wonderful teacher in the old Chinese tradition, big on Five Elements, herbs, Face Reading, Facial Analysis, Hand Reading, Hand Writing Analysis. She had many gifts and skills and inspired our whole family. She was very big on Community Service and founded the Hong Kong School of Hygiene. Her son Thomas is a practising chiropractor in Hong Kong.

Frances first taught me her Facial Rejuvenation protocol in the early 70s and I based my early classes "The Lazy Way to Looking Good" on her protocol. We also use her protocol in our "Natural Facial Rejuvenation" classes, that I co-teach with cranio-sacral therapist, Mary Louise Muller, – all these years later.

I recently met up with Maura Bright who practises Cosmetic Acupuncture and Facial Rejuvenation in London's Harley Street. She studied with Daphne Youngson who was also a student of Dr Frances Wong, in the early days.

We are both excited to be reconnecting with our Ancient Chinese Medicine lineage.

Acne and Pimples: Top 7 Factors to Healing Acne, Pimples and Other Skin Conditions with Chinese Medicine

Don't we all hanker after a healthy looking face and beautiful skin? Worrisome skin problems can range from symptoms as excruciating as acne, pimples, psoriasis and eczema to simply having a sallow dull skin complexion. In Chinese Medicine there are some basic principles that we follow to heal skin problems such as acne, pimples, eczema and psoriasis. No matter what type of skin problem we might have it can be very uncomfortable and embarrassing if it affects our face. For long term skin and face health you need a multi pronged approach. Don't get seduced by the single quick fixes for acne and pimples and other skin problems that you read about on the internet – especially the topical creams that you put on your face and skin. They may be simple but they are usually not effective enough for face and skin health.

There are seven key factors that need to be addressed to have a healthy face and healthy skin. They are as follows:

1. Treat the gut: leaky gut and parasite issues are in fact a big deal in the treatment of face health and skin health through Chinese Medicine. This approach is not well known or widely used in Western or conventional treatments. Conventional treatments focus mostly on topical skin treatments: skin and face creams, antibiotics and steroids which of course affect the digestion, kill off the good bacteria and can make the acne and pimples worse. When the digestion gets worse the face and skin get worse and it becomes one aggravating and frustrating, even embarrassing vicious cycle. So improving your digestion is an important step to improve face health and skin health and to reduce acne, pimples and other skin problems.

2. Improve your Diet: a simple first step is to determine if you are more Yin or more Yang. A lot has been written about general diet for the management of acne, pimples and other skin problems, for example avoid greasy foods, eat more fresh fruit and vegetables, go on a detox diet, but in Chinese Medicine we are much more specific. We hold the same general principles but why is it important to determine if you are Yin or Yang? Because then you can be more aware of the foods that are right for you and therefore be more effective in reducing acne, pimples and other skin conditions. If you're more Yang for example you would want to avoid hot spicy foods because they would exacerbate the heat toxin that is already in your body creating the skin condition of acne or pimples. If you are too Yin you would want to avoid cold or damp foods, which contribute to different skin and face problems.

3. Reduce Heat Toxins: in Chinese Medicine there are various forms of heat such as heat in the liver, heat in the stomach or lungs, heat in the blood and damp heat. Different kinds of heat can result in different kinds of skin and face problems.

4. Healthy Breathing: oxygenates the blood, improves circulation and lymph flow and helps the body, face and skin to detoxify so that acne, pimples, psoriasis and eczema symptoms can be reduced. Tai Chi, Chi Kung, Yoga breathing, – these are all good ways to improve the circulation to your skin, help your body detox impurities from the skin, get that heat toxin flushed out and acne and pimples on the skin cleared up

5. Avoid toxic skin products: these can contribute to the heat toxins in your body and skin and contribute to acne and pimples on the skin. Even in "organic" skin products you can find petrochemicals and preservatives that don't just irritate your surface skin but also get absorbed through the skin into your body. So read the labels and become skin care savvy. eg avoid methyl and propyl parabens, vaseline, and excessive use of skin creams that might have a petroleum base. Household and garden chemicals, household cleaning products can also create heat toxins which affect your skin health.

6. Release old Trauma: areas of your body where you have had accidents can be weaker than the rest of you and therefore be more susceptible to skin problems. Any area of trauma or emotional distress creates what we call "stagnation" in Chinese Medicine and contributes to heat toxins in the blood. This can manifest as skin problems such as acne, pimples, psoriasis or eczema.

7. Emotions: in Chinese Medicine bottled up emotions build and create heat just like old trauma, so make sure you de-stress as much as you can, to reduce the chance of acne and pimples on your skin and face.

Bonus tip: Probably the most important question that a doctor of Chinese Medicine should ask someone one with acne, pimples, eczema or psoriasis is "are you constipated?" This would also help them determine what kind of Yin or Yang foods and activities would help the skin. So make sure that you're not constipated and pay attention to the above factors for beautiful, healthy face and skin.

Excerpt from a Hysterectomy Testimonial by Catherine
about the benefits of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine.

“My name is Catherine and I first came to Dr Julian Lange probably about a year following a hysterectomy in which I fought for my right to keep my ovaries. What began to happen is that the ovaries, particularly my left ovary, began to swell and I was in a considerable amount of pain on a daily basis, but also had intermittent, what I called, attacks, where basically I was bedridden. These attacks came once a month, once every couple months, as time went on they became more and more regular. My GI tract was completely stopped up and I was in pain whenever I ate. [The] surgeons recommended that I have surgery again.

(This does have a happy ending. To find out go to the next page.)
