The focus on Facial Beauty and looking good is such an important part of our modern culture and this can be traced back to ancient times.

Modern options, of course include, cosmetic surgery, Botox, Restalyn, other fillers, and makeup “cover ups” but while these certainly have their place and may even be necessary – especially if you live in Southern California – none of these techniques can replace the vitality and radiance of your face and your skin when you feel healthy, happy and alive!

We all know how awful we look when we’ve missed a few nights of deep sleep and how good our face looks when we wake up refreshed and energized. How about when we have dental work, surgeries, head injuries, old emotional trauma, car accidents? How does that affect how we look and feel? And what happens when those events don’t get released from our head, our neck, our shoulders and our face?

In Chinese Medicine we can assess the health of the internal organ systems, like your digestion, and physical stresses and strains in your tissues, by reading your face. What happens inside you, and what you eat, is revealed on your skin and in your face. So a tired face will be reflecting tired organs.  And then what you put on your face will affect your internal organs. It goes both ways.

The skin is the body’s largest organ. It is the “armor” that protects us from pathogens and excessive water loss, and helps insulate the body, regulates temperature and provides the sense of touch. Perhaps it is because we have so much skin that most of us take it granted, until it begins to show signs of aging, especially in the face.

The face tends to show the effects of aging more than anywhere else in the body perhaps because it is exposed to the elements more than other parts. Another reason is because, of all the skin on the body, the areas under the eyes and around the eyelids have the thinnest skin. These are typically the first areas to show signs of aging, in the form of sagging skin, “crows feet” and wrinkles.

Face and Skin problems can occur for many reasons both from external factors like:

• Head trauma and injury
• Car accidents,
• Dental work
• Old Birth trauma patterns
• Environmental stresses
• Surgeries
• Toxic cosmetic products, and procedures

And internal factors including:

• The skin being stressed and drying out
• Build-up of bacteria, pus, or excess sebum, as in acne and skin rashes
• Issues related to the liver, colon, and/or digestive process
• Hormonal imbalances
• Internal organ imbalances
• Anesthesia and medications
• Poor Diet
• “Normal” aging

Each of the above conditions requires a different approach that can be summed up as a yin or yang approach.

The more yin internal approaches focus on healing old trauma that affects the face and skin, and supporting the internal organ systems.

And the more yang external approaches are about what you put on your face and skin that don’t adversely affect your internal organs but rather enhance and rejuvenate you.

Essential Oils

Essential oils and beautiful skin are natural companions.

Ancient civilizations knew the nourishing and restorative powers of essential oils for skin and used them in their highest quality cosmetics and skin care formulations. In the centuries since, very little can match the versatility, regenerative abilities and effectiveness of pure essential oils on the skin.

The good news is, aromatherapy skin care provides natural skin restoration, can reduce fine lines and wrinkles, diminish age spots, even out skin tone and increase the elasticity and density of skin.

Essential oils work so well for the skin because of their inherent properties. Unlike chemical molecules, such as the petrochemicals found in many skin creams, essential oil molecules are small enough to absorb easily into the skin. They renew the skin by penetrating all the way down to the dermal layer where new cells are generated.

THE YIN AND YANG OF SKIN CARE

Yang oils are cleansing and energizing and recommended when skin conditions arise from bacterial or fungal infections:

• German Chamomile  — A gentle but powerful oil that promotes the regeneration of the skin and reduces inflammation. It helps support digestive, liver and gallbladder functions.
• Lavender  — Ideal for skin care as it prevents the build up of excess sebum and helps with acne, dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, rashes and stretch marks.
• Oregano  — A powerful anti-infectious, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiparasitic oil and immune stimulant. Must be diluted when used on the skin, and only when an anti-infectious oil is needed.
• Rosemary Cineol  — Antifungal, antibacterial and antiseptic, this oil stimulates and supports endocrine gland balance.

Yin oils soothe and rejuvenate the skin and are recommended when skin conditions stem from drying out or stress:

• Blue cypress  — Excellent in skin care to help the circulatory system and lessen scar tissue
• Clary Sage  — Helps with balancing hormones (especially female) and is helpful to dry skin.
• Patchouly —  Beneficial for the skin and may help prevent wrinkles and chapped skin. Although anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial, it has a sedating, calming and relaxing effect.
• Rosewood —  Helps create skin elasticity and tissue regeneration. Gets rid of candida of the skin and slows the aging process.
